Washing Machine Not Draining: 5 Possible Causes and Fixes

Pump filter, hose, drain, pump and board: checking order, estimated cost and when to call service.

A washing machine not draining is among the most common reasons for service calls. The good news is that more than half of these problems come from a simple blockage that you can check yourself before calling a technician. Below are the five most likely causes, in checking order, and when you should call an expert.

1. The pump filter is blocked

Most machines have a small door at the bottom front corner with the pump filter behind it. Coins, clips, sock fragments, small change and hair block the filter here. Switch the machine off and unplug it, place a wide container and a towel underneath, slowly turn the filter anticlockwise to remove it, clean it and refit it. This often solves the problem.

2. The drain hose is kinked or blocked

Check the hose at the back of the machine. It may be squashed against the wall, kinked or wrongly connected to the sink trap. The drain connection of the hose can rise to a maximum of 100 cm; higher than that the pump cannot expel the water. You can detach the hose and run water through it to see whether it is blocked.

3. The drain or trap is blocked

If it is connected to a kitchen or bathroom drain, water may be coming back. Test the same drain with another source (a basin); if it flows slowly, the problem is in the plumbing, not the machine.

4. The drain pump has failed

If the filter and hose are clear and the machine "hums" but does not pump water, the pump vanes may be broken or the motor burnt. Pump replacement is usually done in the same visit. Expect a cost of 1,600 – 2,400 TRY including parts and labour.

5. Electronic board or water level sensor fault

If the pump is fine but not running, the control board may not be sending it a command. If the pressure (pressure switch) sensor misreads, the machine either never drains or restarts the wash. In that case the board needs repair; repair rather than a new board saves 60-70%.

When should you call service?

  • If water still does not leave although the filter and hose are clean.
  • If an error code (such as "E21" or "F03") shows on the display.
  • If a burning smell comes from the machine; unplug it immediately.
  • If you are not confident about opening or dismantling an electrical device.

Prevention

Check pockets before washing, use mesh bags for small garments and clean the pump filter every three months. Running an empty descaling programme at 60-90 °C once a month extends the life of the pump and heating element.

If you cannot solve it yourself, use our fault pre-diagnosis wizard to see the likely cause and estimated cost, and book a same-day service visit.

Common mistakes

Opening the filter while the machine is full floods the bathroom; always drain the water through the hose first. Do not force the pump filter, as its plastic threads break easily. Running the wash programme repeatedly while the fault persists strains the pump and board.
